When people think of cheer, they think of cheerleaders on the side of a football game. That's what fall season is. During the fall football season we cheer for Ida B Wells and Lincoln's Youth Football teams. Fall season involves learning chants, cheer skills like jumps and basic stunting, and building tumbling skills. This is the season where Competition teams are made.
West Portland Cheer competes at the rec level through OCCA. This is when athletes get serious, test their skills and add choreographed dances and music to the skills they built during the sideline season. Training begins in late October with professional choreography. Competitions begin with a starter-comp in December and continue through January and February. Participation in Sideline is required in order to participate in Competition season.
No performances. All skill.
Spring is about the fun of cheer. The focus is on the fundamentals: jumps, kicks, stunting, strength, tumbling and timing. Fundamentals, and fun. After a serious comp season, the athletes can just enjoy their teammates while doing what they love without the pressure of performance and competition. This season is a great introduction for the cheer-curious.
